Educational Technology: Gamifying, Meaningful Learning, and Technology in Your Classroom

Ashley Blacquiere is an educator and game designer, based in Victoria. Ashley has taught classes at the University of Victoria in the Technology and Society program, as well as in the Computer Science department; and at Vancouver Island University in the Media Studies department. As a game designer, Ashley has been part of developing a wide range of digital games from experimental and social networking games, to triple-A titles.

Ashley will speak primarily on the introduction of games and game technology to the classroom; the inevitable challenges and successes of playing games as part of the core curriculum; and on the value of technology that has the capacity to foster classroom participation and deep learning.

David Leach is the Chair of the Department of Writing and the Director of the Interdisciplinary Minor in Technology & Society at the University of Victoria. David will discuss how gamification tools such as badges and leaderboards can promote online engagement and social activity.

Janni Aragon is the Director Technology Integrated Learning and Political Scientist. Janni will speak to the use of educational technology in her teaching and will moderate the conversation.
